The number of hospital beds in the
health centre of Moheshkhali Upzilla has
been increased from 31 to 50. However
there remains a significant shortfall in
all staff ranging from Doctors and
Nurses to Health Assistants required
both to meet government standards as
well as the needs of the centre’s
patients.
The essential services of radiology and
Emergency Transportation (Ambulance)
remain unused for years. As a result
access to comprehensive medical services
remained a dream for the island sub-
district’s 400 000 people. The local
Sub-district Health Officer has notified
higher authorities in written statements
so many times as yet they have not
responded to these concerns.
In 2007, the beds in the Moheshkhali
health complex increased 31 to 50 and
infrastructures were developed
accordingly. The Government standards
for a 50 bed hospital are 28 Doctors, 14
Nurses and 27 Health Assistants and an
additional 101 employees in supportive
services. However at Present 93
positions are vacant in the Moheshkhali
health complex.
Current staffing of the complex is 8
Doctors and 1 nurse. Current vacancies
in the health complex are in the
disciplines of surgery, Medicine,
anesthesia, Gynecology, Pediatrics,
Orthopedics, Dental surgery, 5 assistant
surgeons, an accountant, storekeeper, 3
office assistants and 6 Doctors
assistants and nursing caretaker.
