The hospital beds have been increased to 50 but manpower has not increased The Medical Service is disrupted in Moheshkhali Health Complex

The number of hospital beds in the health centre of Moheshkhali Upzilla has been increased from 31 to 50. However there remains a significant shortfall in all staff ranging from Doctors and Nurses to Health Assistants required both to meet government standards as well as the needs of the centre’s patients.
The essential services of radiology and Emergency Transportation (Ambulance) remain unused for years. As a result access to comprehensive medical services remained a dream for the island sub- district’s 400 000 people. The local Sub-district Health Officer has notified higher authorities in written statements so many times as yet they have not responded to these concerns.
In 2007, the beds in the Moheshkhali health complex increased 31 to 50 and infrastructures were developed accordingly. The Government standards for a 50 bed hospital are 28 Doctors, 14 Nurses and 27 Health Assistants and an additional 101 employees in supportive services. However at Present 93 positions are vacant in the Moheshkhali health complex.
Current staffing of the complex is 8 Doctors and 1 nurse. Current vacancies in the health complex are in the disciplines of surgery, Medicine, anesthesia, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Dental surgery, 5 assistant surgeons, an accountant, storekeeper, 3 office assistants and 6 Doctors assistants and nursing caretaker.
